Predator and Prey

Students will use a list of animals which inhabit the Bog. They will create a food chain of these animals at least four animals or plants long. (Example: Cooper's Hawk - eats - massasauga rattler - eats - jumping mouse - eats - seeds)

These food chains may be made on the following:

  • Construction paper links
  • Six-pack pop rings with paper circles attached

Extension:

Once each student has created a food chain, have the whole class connect their chains with each other to show the critical features of the environment of the Bog and the necessity of maintaining this reserve for the preservation of the species that live there.

What You Will Need:

  • A list of plants and animals found at Cedar Bog
  • Various items depending on the type of chain made

Objectives:

  • Understand the meaning of predator and prey.
  • Identify the function of a food chain.

Ohio Science Outcomes:

  • Grade 4 - #16 - Demonstrate an understanding of the basic needs of living things.
  • Grade 6 - #14 - Trace the transmission of energy in a small, simple ecosystem and/or identify roles of organisms in the energy movement of an ecosystem.
  • Grade 9 - #13 - Trace the flow of energy and/or interrelationships of organisms in an ecosystem.
