Cedar Bog Mobile

Students will create a mobile of the Cedar Bog animals.

Using pictures printed from the Cedar Bog Encyclopedia on the Web, students will choose at least six animals to research. After they make their choices, the students will print out or draw the animals and mount the picture on a construction paper shape such as an oval, a square, or rectangle. On a second shape, students will write a list things the animal eats. This list can be written on a separate piece of paper which can then be glued to the construction paper shape. A third shape will hold interesting facts about the animal, again written on a separate piece of paper and glued to a shape. The shapes are then connected to each other by tying yarn to each and connecting to the next so that the animal, its diet, and its interesting facts are on one chain. Using color coding for each animal also reinforces the connection. Create a similar chain for each animal chosen.

Facts can be researched on the Web or by any other means available. Once each chain is complete, attach it with yarn to the bottom half of a large circle of tag board decorated to represent Cedar Bog. Place a final yarn hanger at the top of the circle to complete the mobile.

Extension:
The tag board circle could contain the printable map of Cedar Bog with the habitats marked. The students could then attach the animal chains and take an extra piece of yarn to glue from the chain to the spot on the map where the animal could be found.
