Welcome to Cedar Bog

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve
A Nature Preserve of the Ohio Historical Society

In 1942, the Ohio Historical Society had the foresight to set aside Cedar Bog as a nature preserve, the first of its kind in Ohio. The staff here are ready to serve you and your needs to the best of our ability either at the bog itself, or via this web site. Please use this site and tell us, if necessary, how we can improve the delivery of information. Thanks for your visit.

Mosquito-Deet-O-Meter   The mosquito-deet-o-meter will give you an idea of how the mosquitos are at the bog and how you need to prepare. The scale is 1-5. Five means mosquito spray and long sleeves are advisable.

Goings On...At the Bog

Earth Day Celebrations at the Bog April 19 and 20th we will be celebrating Earth Day at the Bog. On April 19th Volunteers will be at the kiosk from 10-4 answering questions and giving tours. There will be a wildflower walk at 2:00 - meet at the kiosk.

April 20 at 9:00am there will be a bird walk through the bog led by Doug Overacker of Springfield.

Toad Tuning, was a quiet celebration this year. The cold weather crept in again so we hastily called everyone we could and had a tuning that was small. Eric Doerzbacher led the toad tuning.

Skunk Cabbage Walk, February 23 and 24
pictures are available. Click here.

New Schedule for 2008 Events is on the Bog Happenings Page.

Flower Watchers
Skunk cabbage were small this year with the late and plentiful snow. Most bloomers are about 2 weeks behind. My last visit March 29 only had buds on the Marsh marigolds and a few hepatica with buds. So bloomers should be out in full force by Earth Day.

Bird Watchers

About a dozen red-winged black birds have moved in this week - March 13, 2008. The males are starting to claim their territories. The males arrive first and stake out a bit of appealing real estate. There'll be some displaying and even some mild bird fighting between the males as they compete for the best nesting sites. Later, when the females arrive, they'll chose a mate based, in part, on the nesting site he's claimed.

Check out the bird section of the Cedar Bog Field Guide Animal Encyclopedia. We give great thanks to Ron Austing for sharing his bird photos with us for the bird section of the Animal Encylopedia. He is a wonderful and talented wildlife photographer. If you see a photo of a bird that you like here, visit his web site at RonAusting.com to see his other photos. You can order prints from his web site.
All his photos are copyrighted and reproduced with his permission.
