These are the plants that begin blooming in June. Some of these plants will bloom in the early spring or late summer depending on the weather we have. Fact: Similar to Bee-Balm. The flowers are pinkish or lilac, however, we have had mutant white flowers at the Bog. Once used to treat respiratory ailments because of its scent. Native.

Butterfly Weed

Family: Milkweed
Location: Parking Area
Fact: Butterfly Weed AKA Orange Milkweed or Chigger Flower. It is also known as Pleurisy Root because Native Americans chewed the roots to treat pleurisy and other pulmonary illnesses. Native.

Fact: Native.

Chicory
Chichorium intybus

Family: Aster
Location: Chip Path and Parking Areas
Fact: Chicory AKA Blue Sailor or Ragged Sailor. The long tap root of this plant can be roasted and used with coffee or as a substitute. The blue flowers only last a day. Not Native.

Flowering Spurge
Euphorbia corollata

Family: Spurge
Location: Parking Area
Fact: This plant has colored leaves or petal-like bracts (not actual petals) that make it look like it is blooming, just like a Christmas Poinsetta. This poisonous plant has laxitive properties, hence its name Spurge. Native.

Fact: This is one of ten species of Loosestrife that is in Ohio. Native.

Location: Northern Areas
Fact: This is one of ten species of Loosestrife that is in Ohio. Native.

Grass Pink Orchid
Calopogon pulchellus

Family: Orchid
Location:  Sedge Meadows
Fact: The flowers are a magenta pink and it has leaves that are grass-like. Native.

Gray-headed Coneflower

Fact: Gray-headed Coneflower AKA Prairie Coneflower. Native.

Great Angelica
Angelica atropurpurea

Fact: This plant looks very similar to Hemlock and Queen Anne's Lace. Native.

Location: East Branch of Creek at Bridge
Fact: Native.

Horned Bladderwort
Utricularia cornuta

Family: Bladderwort
Location: Sedgemat Areas
Fact: Unlike other Bladderworts Horned Bladderwort isn't a floating plant, the stalk is upright. The leaves grow below the soil. It sucks in very small organisms through the bladders on the leaves and digests them. Native.

Indian Hemp
Apocynum cannabinum

Family: Dogbane
Location: Meadows and Open Areas
Fact: Indian Hemp AKA Dogbane. This is a close relative of Milkweed. Was once used by American Indians as rope because the dried stems make a strong cord. Orioles use it to make nests. Native.

Lady's Thumb
Polygonum persicaria

Family: Buckwheat
Location: Chip Path
Fact:&nsp;Lady's Thumb AKA Smartweed. Buckwheat family. Named for the small dark spots on the leaves that looked like a bruise caused by a lady's thumb. This plant was also used medicinally to heal bruises. Not Native.

Fact: Native.

Michigan Lily

Family: Lily
Location: Central Areas
Fact: Native.
Blooms:  June-July

Common Milkweed
Asclepias syriaca

Family: Milkweed
Location: Parking and Upper Meadow Areas
Fact:  There are over 2,000 species of Milkweed; 13 are in Ohio. The Monarch butterfly lays its eggs exclusively on Milkweed. The catapillers eat the Milkweed leaves which contain a toxic sap that makes them toxic to birds and other preditors. Native.

Fact: This is a great plant for a butterfly garden as it is the host for the Monarch butterfly catapiller. Native.

Fact:  Native American women drank a tea brewed from the leaves of this plant to aid in childbirth. Native.

Poison Hemlock

Fact: Poison Hemlock AKA Spotted Hemlock. This plant looks very similar to Queen Anne's Lace and Great Angelica. The purple stem helps distinguish it from the other two. This plant is very poisonous. DO NOT TOUCH! Not Native.
