Appearance
8 ½ to 11 inches. Brown back and cap with white belly. Two black bars on upper chest and a white collar, forehead and spot behind eye. Tail and rump are reddish-brown. Wide white wing stripes along the edge of the feathers.
Food
Forages day or night, primarily feeding on insects, earthworms and snails.
Habits and Breeding
lives in open areas such as prairies, meadows and coastal mud flats as well as irrigated land. Nests in a depression on open ground or gravel, but not necessarily near water. They protect their nest well, scolding or threatening any predators who come near. If one is persistant, they will pretend injury and attempt to draw the predator away. |
