Appearance
4 1/2-6 inches. This small bird is streaked brown above and is white below. The bill is long and decurved(curved downward). The tail feathers are sharply pointed. There is a European Treecreeper that is very similar in appearance and habits.
Food
The Brown Creeper feeds by flying to the bottom of a tree and hopping up the trunk searching for insects and larvae. When it is done on one tree it will fly to another tree and begin again. It only goes up trees, where nuthatches will go up and down. Will also visit birdfeeders for chopped nuts and suet.
Habits and Breeding
The Brown Creeper lives all kinds of woodland areas, but it winters along the Gulf Coast of the U.S. The breeding takes place in mature woodlands (areas of tall, older trees) in April and May.
The nest is cup-shaped and usually placed under a piece of bark or in a broken snag. The 4-8 eggs are white with red-brown speckles. The female incubates them for about 15 days and they are ready to leave the nest in another 13-15 days.
